Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon + 1/3 cup water, divided
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 package (10 ounces) Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry Shells
  • 3 cups peeled, cored and diced into 1/2-inch pieces Granny Smith apple (about 2 medium apples)
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 400°. Beat the egg and 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl with a fork or whisk.

  2. Brush tops of the unbaked Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry Shells with the egg wash. Prepare the Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry Shells according to package directions. (Note: package directions indicate 425° — use lower 400° temperature for best results with this recipe.)

  3. In a 12-inch nonstick skillet, cook the apples, 1/3 cup water, brown sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, vanilla extract, cinnamon and kosher salt over medium heat. Stir constantly for 5 minutes. Reduce to low heat and simmer for 8-10 minutes or until the liquid has evaporated. Remove from heat and cool slightly.

  4. Spoon 1/3 cup apple mixture into each Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry Shell. Finish with whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon, if desired.

  5. No thawing of the Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry Shells is required.

  6. The filling is customizable. You can use you favorite type of apples or add dried cranberries for a seasonal twist. It can be made with other fruits, like pears or peaches. It's also great with nuts.

  7. Add finishing touches such as topping with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or top with ice cream, powdered sugar or a caramel drizzle and sea salt.
